China’s largest desert oilfield, the Hade-Fuman Oilfield, has achieved a significant milestone, extracting over 26 million tons of oil and gas from depths below 6,000 meters. This breakthrough highlights the immense potential of ultra-deep oil and gas resources within the Tarim Basin.
Vast Reserves Under the Sands
The Tarim Basin, located in China, is recognized as a crucial area for increasing oil and gas reserves and production. It holds proven oil and gas reserves exceeding 5 billion tons, with more than half of these reserves situated in ultra-deep strata. This geological richness positions the basin as a key frontier for China’s energy sector.
Accelerating Ultra-Deep Production
In recent years, the Tarim Oilfield has intensified its efforts in the ultra-deep layers of the Taklamakan Desert. The Hade-Fuman Oilfield, in particular, has seen the drilling of 485 ultra-deep wells. Among these, 133 wells have individually produced over 10,000 tons of oil and gas, and a remarkable 464 wells have each yielded more than 10,000 tons. This prolific output has established the Hade-Fuman Oilfield as China’s largest desert oilfield and a leading base for ultra-deep oil and gas production.
Reaching into the Earth’s Past
Further demonstrating the exploration’s reach, the Zhentan 1 well, situated on the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, successfully retrieved rock cores from a staggering depth of 8,080 meters. These ancient rock samples have been undisturbed for approximately 500 million years. This marks a significant achievement for China, being the first time rock cores have been extracted from depths exceeding 8,000 meters in the northwestern part of the Tarim Basin.
The continuous advancements in drilling technology and exploration efforts in ultra-deep formations are crucial for securing China’s energy future. The successful extraction of vast quantities of oil and gas from challenging depths, coupled with the recovery of ancient geological samples, underscores the scientific and economic importance of the Tarim Basin.
