The first unit of the 2x660MW Golmud coal-fired power project in Qinghai, developed by China Huadian Corporation, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully connecting to the grid for the first time. The momentous event occurred on October 2nd at 3:28 AM, marking a crucial step towards the project’s full operational capacity.
A New Benchmark in High-Altitude Power Generation
Situated in the city of Golmud, within the Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province, this project stands at an average altitude of approximately 2800 meters. This places it as the highest-altitude coal-fired power project in China, boasting the largest installed capacity among such high-elevation facilities. The successful grid connection of Unit 1 signifies that it is now officially integrated into the electrical network and capable of supplying power externally. This achievement lays a robust foundation for the subsequent 168-hour full-load trial operation, paving the way for the project’s timely and high-quality commissioning.
Project Scope and Environmental Commitment
The Golmud Phase I 2x660MW coal-fired power project represents a substantial investment of approximately 6.2 billion yuan. Upon completion, it is designed to generate an estimated 6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. The project’s infrastructure includes two 660MW ultra-supercritical indirect air-cooled condensing coal-fired units. A key aspect of its development is the simultaneous installation of flue gas desulfurization and SCR denitrification systems, ensuring that emissions of air pollutants meet ultra-low emission standards.
Technological Innovation for Challenging Environments
A noteworthy feature of this project is its utilization of advanced technology designed for high-altitude conditions. The 660MW ultra-supercritical deep-peak-shaving units are specifically engineered to operate efficiently while burning high-alkali coal in a high-altitude region. This innovative approach has earned recognition from the National Energy Administration, being included in the fifth batch of major technical equipment lists for the energy sector as a ‘first set’ (or ‘first batch’) of significant technological equipment.
The successful grid connection of Unit 1 is a testament to the meticulous planning, engineering prowess, and technological innovation driving this landmark project. It addresses the critical need for reliable power generation in high-altitude regions while adhering to stringent environmental protection standards. The project is poised to play a vital role in the energy landscape of Qinghai and beyond, contributing to both economic development and energy security.
