Meta is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its Ray-Ban smart glasses, with a major update slated for the latter half of 2026. This upcoming refresh promises to enhance the user experience with improved navigation, more granular control over notifications, and the introduction of a captivating Hologram virtual avatar feature for video calls.

Smarter Navigation for Everyday Journeys

Navigating the world with your smart glasses is set to become more intuitive. Meta is refining the voice-guided walking directions, moving beyond simple street names. Instead of just hearing “Turn left on Third Street,” users will receive more contextual cues, such as “Turn left at the yellow house ahead.” This change aims to make the navigation experience feel more natural and integrated with the user’s surroundings.

Furthermore, Meta is expanding the navigation modes to include dedicated options for “cycling” and “public transport,” catering to a wider range of commuting needs and providing more tailored guidance for different travel methods.

Personalized Notification Control

Tired of constant, irrelevant interruptions? Meta is giving users greater agency over the notifications displayed on their Ray-Ban smart glasses. The update will allow individuals to customize which notifications appear and to disable specific types they deem disruptive. This enhanced control is designed to significantly reduce unwanted alerts and ensure a smoother, more focused user experience.

Hologram Avatars Arrive for Video Calls

A groundbreaking feature expected later this year is the introduction of Hologram virtual avatars. Initially available to users in the Early Access program in the United States, this technology will first integrate with WhatsApp video calls. To create a Hologram, users will use the Meta AI app to scan their face and record about a minute of voice samples. Once set up, when a user initiates or receives a WhatsApp video call while wearing their Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, the recipient will see an AI-generated avatar of the user. This avatar’s facial expressions will be dynamically generated in real-time, primarily based on voice input captured by the glasses’ microphone.

Discover New Experiences with ‘Explore’ App

Meta also plans to introduce an “Explore” app for the Ray-Ban Display later this year. This feature can be thought of as a curated showcase for third-party web applications. It will directly present and recommend applications that Meta believes users will find valuable, making it easier to discover new functionalities and services. While the long-term vision for this feature, potentially evolving into a full app store, remains unannounced, it marks a step towards a more dynamic and extensible smart glasses ecosystem.

These updates signal Meta’s continued commitment to enhancing the capabilities and user-friendliness of its Ray-Ban smart glasses, moving towards a more integrated and personalized wearable technology experience.
