US-based robotics startup Figure has bid farewell to its older F.02 humanoid robot in a dramatic fashion, reminiscent of a scene from the movie Terminator 2. As the company’s F.03 fleet expands, the F.02 model has become obsolete. Rather than simply dismantling the outdated robot, which contains valuable proprietary hardware and intellectual property, Figure opted for a more ceremonial send-off.

A Fiery Farewell Inspired by an Icon

The idea for the F.02’s ‘cremation’ came directly from Arnold Schwarzenegger, the actor famous for portraying the T-800 Terminator. Figure had previously solicited ideas for the F.02’s farewell ceremony on social media, and Schwarzenegger’s suggestion to have the robot walk into a furnace resonated with the company.

Schwarzenegger himself made an appearance at the melting facility. Donning full protective gear, he personally led an F.02 unit towards the furnace, a poignant tribute to Terminator 2: Judgment Day. In a concluding moment, he removed his helmet and declared, “Figure 2 is retired.”

Navigating the Logistics of a Robotic Demise

Finding a suitable furnace proved to be a significant challenge. Many companies across the United States and Mexico declined Figure’s request, citing concerns about the safety of the lithium batteries housed within the robot. Ultimately, the company found a facility that met their requirements in Imatra, Finland.

Figure didn’t simply discard the F.02. Instead, they developed a specialized AI model to train the robot to enter the furnace in the most spectacular way possible, adding a layer of technological sophistication to its final moments.

The Evolution of Humanoid Robots

The retirement of the F.02 marks a significant milestone for Figure, highlighting the rapid pace of development in the field of humanoid robotics. The company’s focus has shifted to its newer F.03 models, which are designed to be more advanced and capable. The decision to give the F.02 a memorable send-off underscores the company’s appreciation for its technological lineage and its commitment to innovation.

Directly dismantling older robot models can be a time-consuming process that could potentially slow down the development of next-generation robots, such as the anticipated F.04. By choosing this unique farewell, Figure not only paid homage to a classic film but also streamlined their R&D process, ensuring they can continue to push the boundaries of what humanoid robots can achieve.

This event serves as a fascinating intersection of robotics, pop culture, and industrial process, demonstrating how companies are finding creative ways to manage the lifecycle of their cutting-edge technology.
