Tencent has reportedly inked a major overseas leasing deal with Oracle, securing approximately 100,000 advanced AI chips across multiple Oracle data centers in Southeast Asia. This significant agreement, valued at around $7 billion, is a five-year lease with a substantial upfront payment of 30%.

Boosting AI Development

The primary objective behind this substantial investment is to fuel Tencent’s ambitious artificial intelligence initiatives. The company plans to leverage this newfound computing power to accelerate the development of its AI models and intelligent agent tools. This move underscores the increasing importance of robust AI infrastructure for tech giants aiming to stay at the forefront of innovation.

Strategic Overseas Expansion

The Financial Times reported on this landmark deal, noting that neither Tencent nor Oracle has officially commented on the matter. The lease agreement is structured to allow Tencent access to advanced chips that may be difficult to obtain through other channels, particularly given potential restrictions on acquiring such technology within China. This strategic move allows Tencent to circumvent certain limitations and bolster its AI capabilities.

While ByteDance and Alibaba remain significant clients for data center services in Southeast Asia, Tencent’s new lease marks a major expansion of its overseas digital footprint. The deal is permissible under U.S. regulations, highlighting a complex global landscape for semiconductor access and cloud computing services.

Increased Capital Expenditure

Tencent’s financial reports offer further insight into its commitment to AI. The company’s capital expenditure saw a dramatic increase of 176% year-on-year in the second quarter, reaching 53 billion yuan. This surge was largely attributed to investments in AI infrastructure and advance payments for computing resources. Alongside these hardware acquisitions, Tencent has been actively recruiting top-tier AI talent and restructuring its infrastructure and data management departments to support its expanding AI ambitions.

This significant investment in AI capabilities comes at a time when the global demand for advanced computing power is soaring, driven by the rapid advancements and widespread adoption of AI technologies across various industries. Tencent’s strategic leasing of Oracle’s data center resources positions the company to compete more effectively in the global AI race.
