Mercedes-AMG is gearing up to launch its first-ever SUV developed exclusively on a dedicated electric architecture. Following an official teaser, new spy shots of a prototype have emerged, revealing significantly reduced camouflage. This new electric SUV, codenamed X591, is set to be the SUV counterpart to the AMG GT four-door coupe.
Distinctive Design and Familiar Touches
The prototype, while still bearing some camouflage, offers a clear look at the vehicle’s overall design. Its sleek, low-slung roofline combined with strong, sculpted shoulder lines creates a profile that blends coupe-SUV aesthetics with a sporty shooting brake character. The latest images provide an unobstructed view of the cabin’s glass areas.
Unique lighting elements are expected to enhance its distinctiveness. The front will feature Y-shaped LED daytime running lights and a generously sized grille, while the rear will sport round taillights. This round taillight design might become a signature element for AMG’s upcoming range of standalone electric models.
Eye-catching black alloy wheels are prominent, with large brake discs and bright yellow calipers clearly visible, hinting at the performance capabilities.
Performance-Oriented Interior and Electric Powertrain
Inside, the cabin is anticipated to adopt a multi-screen layout similar to the AMG GT four-door coupe. The SUV body style will naturally offer increased space for occupants and luggage compared to its sedan sibling.
Underpinning the new SUV is the dedicated AMG.EA electric platform, featuring an 800-volt electrical system. It will be powered by axial flux motors developed by Yasa, known for their high power density. The battery technology will draw inspiration from Formula 1, utilizing direct liquid cooling for the cells.
Astonishing Power Figures and F1-Inspired Tech
Drawing parallels with the AMG GT four-door coupe, the flagship tri-motor version is projected to deliver an astounding maximum power output of 860 kW (1169 hp) and a peak torque of 2000 Nm. This setup could enable a 0-100 km/h sprint in approximately 2.5 seconds. A dual-motor variant is also expected, offering up to 600 kW (816 hp) and 1800 Nm of torque.
AMG plans to enhance the driving experience with its AMGFORCE S+ system, aiming to replicate the auditory and sensory feedback of internal combustion engines. Carefully reproduced V8 engine sound effects will be broadcast through speakers, both inside and outside the cabin, complemented by simulated gear shifts.
Rapid Charging and Advanced Chassis
The battery is expected to be a 106 kWh unit, similar to that found in the AMG GT four-door coupe, supporting ultra-fast DC charging up to 600 kW. This capability could allow for approximately 460 km of range to be added in just 10 minutes.
The chassis will incorporate AMG’s latest technologies, including AMG Active Ride Control air suspension with semi-active roll stabilization. The rear-axle steering system, already visible in spy shots, will further contribute to agility and stability.
Debut Date and Significant Anniversary
The official debut of the all-new AMG electric SUV is scheduled for October 17th. The launch event will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Coincidentally, this date marks the 140th anniversary of Karl Benz applying for the patent for the world’s first automobile.
