GTA 6 Pre-Orders: Xbox Responds to PS5 Dominance Rumors

Recent reports suggested that pre-orders for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 are leaning heavily towards Sony’s PlayStation 5, raising concerns for the Xbox platform. However, Xbox Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) Matthew Booty has stated that Microsoft is “very pleased” with the current pre-order performance for the Xbox version.

Xbox’s Perspective on GTA 6 Pre-Orders

The discussion was ignited by a report from The Verge journalist Tom Warren, who noted that the PS5’s lead in GTA 6 pre-orders served as a “wake-up call” for Xbox. This observation came amidst news of layoffs and restructuring within Xbox.

Countering these concerns, Booty shared Microsoft’s internal data, indicating that the pre-order share for the Xbox version of GTA 6 aligns closely with Xbox’s overall share in the console market. He quoted, “Tom, we’re very pleased with how GTA 6 is pre-ordering on Xbox. It’s setting records on the platform and we expect it to set more records throughout the fall. Our internal data shows our pre-order share is consistent with our market share on the platform.”

This statement suggests that while the PS5 might be seeing a higher volume of pre-orders, the performance on Xbox is considered strong and in line with expectations given the console’s market position.

Console Market Share and GTA 6

Unlike Sony, which regularly discloses its PS5 sales figures, Microsoft has not published specific sales numbers for the Xbox Series X|S in years. As of June 30, the PlayStation 5 had surpassed 95 million units in cumulative sales. Analysts estimate that the PS5’s sales are at least double that of the combined Xbox Series generation. If this sales ratio holds true, it would imply that the PS5 version of GTA 6 could indeed have approximately twice the pre-orders of the Xbox Series X|S version.

Sony’s Strategic Partnerships and Marketing

Sony’s close collaboration with Rockstar Games on GTA 6 is a significant factor influencing pre-order trends. Sony has been actively promoting the game, with most of the gameplay showcases featuring the PS5 version. Furthermore, the PS5 is prominently featured in the game’s promotional materials, and Sony has even introduced a custom user interface (UI) for the console themed around GTA 6.

Sony has also highlighted how GTA 6 will leverage the PS5’s unique features, such as the DualSense controller’s built-in speaker and haptic feedback. Additionally, a custom icon for GTA 6 marketing campaigns, incorporating the game’s color palette and a light feather motif, has appeared on the mobile PlayStation App.

Xbox Restructuring and Future Outlook

The Verge also touched upon the ongoing “reset” at Xbox, reportedly led by the new Xbox CEO, Asharfi Sharma. This restructuring could potentially pave the way for Xbox to be spun off as a separate entity or operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft in the future.

GTA 6 Launch Details

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19th, with its initial launch available exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game’s massive anticipation means that pre-order performance is a key indicator of potential launch success across both platforms.
