Storage module enterprise SCY (时创意) has officially announced the commencement of sample shipments for its new embedded flash memory utilizing QLC NAND flash, adhering to the UFS 2.2 standard. This move signals an advancement in storage solutions, particularly for mid-range and entry-level devices.

Key Features and Performance

The newly launched QLC UFS 2.2 embedded flash memory from SCY is available in three distinct capacity configurations: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. The company highlights impressive performance metrics, with sequential read speeds reaching up to 1080MB/s and sequential write speeds peaking at 860MB/s. This translates to sequential read and write performance that is approximately three times faster than that of eMMC storage, offering a significant boost in data transfer capabilities.

To ensure data integrity and reliability, SCY has integrated a 4K LDPC ECC (Error Correction Code) engine into its design. This advanced error correction mechanism is crucial for maintaining performance and longevity, especially with QLC NAND technology. Furthermore, the embedded flash memory supports Write Booster, a feature designed to enhance write performance by utilizing a SLC cache, thereby improving the user experience for tasks involving frequent data writing.

Form Factor and Target Applications

The SCY QLC UFS 2.2 flash memory is presented in a compact BGA (Ball Grid Array) package measuring 11.5×13.0×0.95 mm. This small form factor allows for seamless integration with mainstream mobile SoC platforms. The company is targeting a wide range of devices with this new storage solution, including:

  • Mid-range and entry-level 5G smartphones
  • Tablets and audio-visual entertainment terminals
  • Smart home central control units
  • Voice interaction devices

By offering a balance of capacity, speed, and cost-effectiveness, SCY aims to provide a compelling storage upgrade for a variety of consumer electronics. The adoption of QLC NAND technology, combined with the UFS 2.2 interface, represents a strategic effort to meet the growing demand for higher storage capacities and faster data access in increasingly connected and feature-rich devices.

Market Implications

The introduction of QLC-based UFS 2.2 storage by SCY is noteworthy as it brings higher density NAND flash technology to a more accessible performance tier. While TLC (Triple-Level Cell) and MLC (Multi-Level Cell) NAND have traditionally dominated higher-end UFS applications, QLC offers the potential for lower cost per gigabyte, making larger storage capacities more affordable. This could enable manufacturers to equip more devices with 256GB or even 512GB of internal storage without a substantial increase in bill of materials cost.

The UFS 2.2 standard itself offers improvements over its predecessors, providing a solid foundation for mobile storage. Coupled with QLC NAND, SCY’s new offering positions itself as a viable option for devices where performance needs are significant but high-end UFS 3.x speeds are not strictly necessary. This strategy allows for a more optimized cost-performance ratio, benefiting both manufacturers and end-users. As the market continues to push for more data-intensive applications, from high-resolution media consumption to AI-driven features on mobile devices, efficient and cost-effective storage solutions like SCY’s QLC UFS 2.2 will play a crucial role in enabling these advancements.
