In a development straight out of science fiction, the Zhongqing T800 humanoid robot made its debut in a human-robot combat event held in San Francisco on September 20th. This marks a significant moment as a humanoid robot participated for the first time in the REK (Robot Fighting) league’s octagon.

A Touch of Terminator

The Zhongqing T800, visually enhanced with a head resembling the iconic T-800 Terminator from the movies, entered the ring for a face-off against influencer boxer Frankie LaPenna. The match culminated in a dramatic moment when the T800 delivered a powerful kick, sending LaPenna, who was wearing full protective gear, to the ground and securing a victory for the robot.

More Than Just AI

It’s important to note that this bout was not a fully autonomous AI engagement. The T800 was remotely controlled by an operator utilizing VR headsets and motion controllers. The robot itself was responsible for maintaining dynamic balance and correcting its posture during the fight. This setup highlights the current capabilities and limitations of advanced robotics in real-time physical interaction.

REK’s Evolving Spectacle

The REK league, based in the United States, typically features robotic versus robotic combat, aiming to replicate the excitement of movies like ‘Real Steel’. This human-robot confrontation, however, added a unique and captivating dimension to the event. Observers noted that the match began with the human contestant gaining an early advantage, even knocking the robot down. However, the T800 quickly recovered and retaliated with a series of punches, leading to its victory. Post-win, the robot struck a triumphant pose, further adding to the spectacle.

Adding to the unique nature of REK events, the league also showcased a robot designed to resemble the Predator on September 23rd, with Frankie LaPenna once again taking on the role of the combatant facing the machine.
