Shanghai, China – The quest for mass production of Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, is gaining momentum. Industry sources have revealed that Tesla’s dedicated robot team has been conducting factory inspections across various supply chain partners in China’s Yangtze River Delta region over the past week.

Supplier Inspections Underway

Companies like Top Cloud Group, Sambo Control, and Junsheng Electronics, which are crucial suppliers of core electromechanical components such as joint modules, actuators, and precision structural parts, have reportedly welcomed Tesla’s inspection teams. According to sources close to the matter, these companies have already secured orders for Tesla’s humanoid robots, though the specific volumes may vary.

The purpose of these factory audits is to rigorously assess production lines, quality control measures, and compliance standards. Passing these inspections is a key step before these suppliers can commence manufacturing activities for the Optimus project. “These companies have already received orders from Tesla for the humanoid robot before this factory inspection, with varying degrees of quantity. The inspection will assess the quality and compliance of related production lines. After passing, production will begin soon,” stated one industry insider.

Broader Geographic Scope

Contrary to some earlier speculation that the inspections were confined to Ningbo, industry participants have clarified that Tesla’s robot team’s visit also encompassed supply chain enterprises in other major Yangtze Delta cities, including Hangzhou and Shanghai. Notably, the companies being visited are largely those that already have established collaborative relationships with Tesla for its automotive business, suggesting a leveraging of existing partnerships.

Earlier reports from 21st Century Business Herald, citing industry sources, indicated that Tesla’s relevant teams landed in Ningbo on September 16th and began a new round of mass production inspections for its robot business on the 17th. These inspections are understood to be directly geared towards paving the way for the mass production of the Optimus robot, with relevant orders already placed with supply chain companies.

Optimus Production and Vision

Tesla’s ambitious plan includes rolling out approximately 50,000 Optimus robots by the end of this year. These robots are intended for deployment across Tesla’s global super-factory network. However, it’s important to note that as of now, there are no channels available for general consumers to purchase the Optimus robot.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously acknowledged the challenges ahead. In July, he candidly admitted that Optimus production would start “extremely slowly” due to the entirely new nature of the endeavor, contrasting it with car manufacturing. Musk has expressed immense confidence in the robot’s capabilities. In March, while discussing the Optimus 3 robot, he described it as “the most advanced robot in the world by far” and stated, “I haven’t seen any robot demonstrations that are even close to Optimus 3.”

Regarding production timelines, Musk outlined a plan where low-volume production could commence in the summer, with high-volume production anticipated to begin in 2027. The current series of supplier inspections marks a critical step in accelerating this timeline and realizing Tesla’s vision for widespread robotic integration.
