Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch a new smart home display, codenamed J490, as soon as next month, according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. This device is expected to be a significant addition to Apple’s ‘personal intelligent hub’ strategy, which aims to position the iPhone as the central device in the Apple ecosystem.
A New ‘Personal Intelligent Hub’
The strategy, championed by Apple’s new CEO John Ternus, emphasizes the iPhone’s role as the core of a user’s digital life. Ternus outlined his vision for an ideal AI-powered device, highlighting features like constant connectivity, a suitable display, top-tier cameras and microphones, excellent battery life, ease of use, and seamless integration with other hardware, software, and services. While this description initially led many to believe a groundbreaking new AI hardware product was imminent, Ternus clarified that the iPhone itself already embodies this ideal device.
This perspective is particularly relevant as competitors like OpenAI introduce AI-centric hardware. The iPhone, powered by Siri AI and Apple Intelligence, serves as the primary showcase for Apple’s advancements in this area. The company plans to further strengthen the iPhone’s position, requiring it as a foundational device for future products like potential smart glasses and AirPods with cameras.
The Upcoming Smart Home Display
While the iPhone remains central to mobile life, the new smart home display is designed to act as a hub within the home. It will integrate smart home device control, video calls, intercom functions, and media playback, all powered by a new Siri AI-driven operating system. Internally codenamed J490, the device has reportedly been distributed to employees for extensive testing. It features a continuous internet connection via home Wi-Fi, a high-quality display, a camera, and microphones. The user interface is said to blend elements from iOS, tvOS, and watchOS, with initial setup and synchronization tasks requiring an iPhone.
The display is described as roughly square and will come in two forms: one that can be placed on a stand, resembling a halved HomePod mini, and another for wall mounting. It bears resemblance to Amazon’s Echo Show but with a smaller screen. A key feature will be facial recognition via the front-facing camera, enabling personalized content delivery based on the recognized user, including apps, notes, schedules, news, and music. Notably, this facial recognition will not use the standard Face ID depth sensor, suggesting Apple might incorporate similar technology into future devices like the rumored iPhone Duo foldable, addressing potential space constraints.
Siri AI and Ecosystem Integration
The smart home display will include independent home screens, widgets, and watch faces, drawing inspiration from the Apple Watch and the ‘StandBy’ mode introduced in the iPhone Duo. The true game-changer is expected to be Siri AI. Originally planned for a 2024 launch, the device’s release was contingent on the maturation of Siri’s AI capabilities, which have now arrived with the iOS 27 update. Users will be able to leverage Siri on this home hub for cross-device and cross-account information retrieval, requesting specific podcasts, songs, or images, and performing complex actions within Apple’s native applications.
Other Apple Updates
- iPhone Duo Stylus Plan Scrapped: Apple had previously tested a short, magnetic stylus for the iPhone Duo foldable, but this plan has been abandoned. Citing Steve Jobs’s famous quote about not wanting styluses on phones, the company decided to make the foldable compatible with existing iPad Apple Pencils instead. This shift occurred due to significant technical issues encountered with the custom stylus just before mass production. Full support for iPad Pencils is expected by late 2026.
- Fitness+ Staff Reductions: Apple has initiated layoffs within its Fitness+ service, a move seen as a precursor to further cost-cutting and business restructuring. While the service is not being shut down, the high costs of content production and ongoing user churn have led to a strategic reassessment. Audio content, such as ‘Time to Walk’ and ‘Time to Run,’ will see reduced update frequency. Many anticipate Fitness+ will eventually be integrated into the revamped Health app.
- iOS 27.2 Beta: The latest beta version of iOS includes a preview of the new Health app, expanded Siri AI language support, and user profiles for the Apple TV app on non-tvOS devices. A special version, 27.1, is speculated to be for the iPhone Duo, and users acquiring the foldable should avoid upgrading to 27.2 immediately to prevent potential setup issues.
- iPhone Duo Design: Second-generation iPhone Duo is unlikely to feature a major design overhaul, following Apple’s trend of maintaining hardware designs for extended periods.
With advancements in smart home technology and continued focus on the iPhone as a central hub, Apple is steadily reinforcing its presence across key consumer scenarios: home, mobility, and potentially, in the future, the automotive sector.
