The Nobel Foundation has announced a significant increase in the prize money for all Nobel Prizes, set to take effect in 2026. Each prize will be elevated by 1 million Swedish Kronor, bringing the total award to 12 million Swedish Kronor (approximately 815,000 Euros or 680,000 RMB). This marks a notable adjustment to the prestigious awards, which have seen fluctuations in their real value since their inception.

A Legacy of Innovation and Generosity

The Nobel Prizes were established following the famous will of Alfred Nobel, signed in 1895. Nobel envisioned that the majority of his substantial estate, valued at over 31 million Swedish Kronor at the time (equivalent to about 2.2 billion Swedish Kronor today), would be invested to create a fund. The income generated from this fund was to be distributed annually as prizes to those who had conferred the greatest benefit to humankind in the preceding year.

The Nobel Foundation, a private institution, was founded in 1900 based on Nobel’s will. The foundation’s investment strategy is critical for preserving and growing the fund, thereby ensuring the sustainability of the prize money. Initially, in 1901, “safe securities” were understood to primarily mean government bonds or loans secured by real estate. However, the economic and financial shifts brought about by two World Wars necessitated a reinterpretation of this definition.

Adapting to Economic Realities

By the early 1950s, the Swedish government, at the request of the Nobel Foundation’s board, approved modifications to the investment regulations. This granted the board greater flexibility, allowing investments beyond traditional bonds and real estate to include a wider range of stocks. This adaptability has been crucial in navigating evolving financial landscapes.

Since the first prizes were awarded in 1901 with a sum of 150,000 Swedish Kronor per prize, the nominal value of the prize money has faced a trend of decline in real terms due to inflation and economic changes. However, thanks to the granted investment autonomy and a tax exemption secured in 1946, the downward trend was eventually reversed. The actual value of the prize money managed to keep pace with inflation, and by 1991, its real value in Swedish Kronor was restored.

Upcoming Announcements

This year’s Nobel Prize announcements are scheduled to take place from October 5th to October 12th. The upcoming award cycle will be the last before the prize money officially increases to 12 million Swedish Kronor in 2026, reflecting the Nobel Foundation’s ongoing commitment to honoring significant global contributions.

The decision to increase the prize money underscores the foundation’s efforts to maintain the prestige and financial significance of the Nobel Prizes in the face of changing economic conditions. This adjustment aims to ensure that the awards continue to represent a substantial recognition of groundbreaking achievements across various fields of human endeavor.
