Snap Inc. has officially launched its first standalone Augmented Reality (AR) glasses designed for consumers, the Snap Specs. These innovative glasses are now available, with the Wi-Fi version priced at $2,195.

Cellular Connectivity and Pricing Options

In collaboration with Verizon, Snap is also offering a cellular version of the Snap Specs, which will retail for $2,395. For Verizon customers, a data plan starts at $10 per month. Non-Verizon customers will have a monthly data plan option starting at $20.

Design and Comfort

Crafted from Swiss TR90 polymer material, the Snap Specs are designed for comfort and durability. They come in two sizes, weighing between 132 and 136 grams. The glasses support prescription lens inserts and include various nose pad accessories to ensure a personalized fit for different users.

Advanced Display and Lens Technology

The AR glasses utilize Snap’s proprietary LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) display technology, offering a 51-degree field of view and capable of displaying 16 million colors. A standout feature is the electrochromic lenses, which can transition from fully transparent to sunglasses mode in just 10 seconds, adapting to various lighting conditions.

Standalone Operation and AI Capabilities

A key highlight of the Snap Specs is their ability to operate independently without requiring an external computing unit. The device is powered by two Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. One processor is dedicated to computer vision tasks, while the other manages the Snap AR interface. The integrated AI capabilities allow the glasses to monitor what the user is seeing in real-time, understand user intent, and provide contextual assistance. This platform also enables developers to create intelligent AR applications that can react dynamically to the real world.

Battery Life and Charging

In terms of battery life, the Snap Specs offer up to approximately 4 hours of usage under mixed-use scenarios. The accompanying charging case extends the total battery life to around 20 hours, ensuring extended usability throughout the day.

The launch of Snap Specs marks a significant step towards making advanced AR technology more accessible to the general public, combining sophisticated features with a more user-friendly, standalone design.
