NIO vehicle owners have recently been prompted to choose between two major map providers, Gaode Maps and Baidu Maps, for their in-car navigation systems. This change, which began around September 18th, requires users to select one preferred map service.
System Optimization Prompt
According to screenshots shared by car owners, the NIO in-car system displays a message explaining the initiative. It states that to “optimize system resources and bring a more stable performance experience,” the navigation service will undergo an update. Users are instructed to choose one map to continue using, with the unselected application being taken offline.
The prompt also specifies a deadline: if no selection is made by September 27th, 2026, the system will automatically retain the most recently used map application for the user.
Speculation and Official Response
This move has led some car owners to speculate that the partnership with one of the map providers might be nearing its end. However, NIO’s customer service has clarified the situation.
A NIO customer service representative stated that the collaborations with both map providers have not yet expired. The primary reason for this selection process is to enhance the overall stability of the vehicle’s system. Users are encouraged to choose the map they prefer to keep, based on their individual habits and preferences.
While the exact technical reasons for requiring users to choose one map are not fully detailed, the emphasis is on improving system stability and resource management within the vehicle’s infotainment system. This could involve reducing background processes, consolidating data, or streamlining updates associated with the navigation services.
NIO’s approach suggests a move towards a more streamlined and potentially more efficient in-car software experience. By consolidating the navigation service to a single provider, the company might be aiming to reduce complexity in development and maintenance, ultimately leading to a smoother user experience. Car owners will need to make their choice before the specified deadline to ensure their preferred navigation service remains available.
