AMD Users Hit by Windows 11 Update Issues

A recent cumulative update for Windows 11, released by Microsoft in September, appears to be causing significant stability problems for users with AMD processors. Reports are surfacing across various communities detailing issues ranging from graphics driver crashes to complete system lockups and display disconnections.

Trouble with September Updates

According to a report from NeoWin, users have identified the problems arising after installing the September Windows 11 cumulative update, identified as KB5124008, alongside the .NET update KB5126052. The primary symptom reported is a graphics driver timeout, which can quickly escalate into more severe system instability.

Driver Timeouts and System Crashes

The described timeout occurs when the system gives up waiting for the graphics driver to load properly. This failure to load results in an unresponsive system, often accompanied by the display freezing or disconnecting. A forced restart is typically required to regain control of the machine. Even attempting to uninstall and reinstall the latest AMD graphics drivers, including older versions like 26.7.1 and 26.6.4, has not resolved the issue for affected users. In many cases, the system continues to timeout within seconds of the driver installation completing.

Adrenalin Software and Further Complications

Beyond the driver timeouts, users are also reporting that simply opening the AMD Adrenalin software causes the entire system to freeze. Disabling the AMD audio driver has provided some temporary relief, preventing complete system crashes in certain scenarios. However, even with this workaround, opening a web browser can still lead to the computer freezing, while persistent driver timeout warnings continue to appear.

Failed Fixes and Rollbacks

The troubleshooting efforts by affected users have extended to rolling back system updates. According to the reports, reverting to the August Windows 11 security update KB5121003 and rolling back the .NET update to a previous version, KB5120708, have not rectified the problem. This suggests that the issue might be more deeply rooted than a simple driver conflict or a single faulty update.

As of now, Microsoft has not issued an official statement regarding these AMD-specific Windows 11 compatibility issues. Affected users are advised to monitor official Microsoft and AMD support channels for potential solutions or further information.
