To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the beloved Civilization franchise, 2K and Firaxis Games have unveiled exciting plans for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII. The upcoming roadmap includes a substantial free update and the game’s first paid DLC, both slated for release in 2027.
‘Arc of Tomorrow’ Free Update Arrives in 2027
The ‘Arc of Tomorrow’ update, scheduled for 2027, will introduce a brand-new era to Civilization VII: the Atomic Age. This significant free expansion will push the game’s historical timeline from the mid-20th century into the near future. Players can expect a host of new features designed to reflect this modern era, including large-scale urban architecture, updated technology and civics trees, new victory conditions, social policies, and narrative events. The update will also introduce new civilizations and leaders fitting the Atomic Age theme, with Gandhi confirmed to make a return.
Nuclear warfare gameplay is set to be expanded with new offensive and defensive options, units, and changes to the ‘Mutually Assured Destruction’ (MAD) mechanic. For empire management, players will gain new ways to handle sprawling empires and loyalty issues by allowing settlements to declare independence and be released as city-states. A unique ‘Blockbuster Movie’ system will let players send film crews to find ideal filming locations, with the quality of the resulting film impacting in-game revenue. Additionally, the ‘Industrial Manufactured Goods’ system will allow players to combine specific resources according to recipes to produce powerful new commodities, such as enriched uranium.
‘Earthrise’ Paid DLC Launches Late 2027
The first premium expansion, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII: Earthrise, will launch later in 2027. This DLC shifts the game’s focus to humanity’s space race, expanding the scope of gameplay to the entire solar system. However, ‘Earthrise’ also emphasizes the protection of Earth itself. More details will be shared in the coming months.
Players will begin by observing the night sky in the Ancient and Exploration eras, naming celestial bodies and learning about the solar system. As civilizations advance to the modern era, they can initiate orbital missions around Earth and the Moon, setting the stage for larger-scale space exploration. By the Atomic Age, players can leverage their established space agencies to launch missions across the solar system, discovering planetary features and untapped resources that can bolster Earth-bound civilizations.
The expansion introduces ‘Environmental Adaptation’ gameplay, where new unit abilities and technologies allow players to alter terrain and its yields within their territory. New civil engineering structures will help combat natural disasters exacerbated by global warming and even reverse its effects. Civilizations will also gain new advantages for specializing in developing land within specific ecological zones.
Upcoming 1.5.0 Update and Map Enhancements
Later this month, Civilization VII will receive the 1.5.0 update, focusing on quality-of-life improvements and the highly anticipated ‘True Start Location: Earth’ map. This new map will generate continents, terrain, and resources based on the real world, providing a more immersive historical experience. Players’ starting positions will correspond to the actual historical origins of their chosen civilization, and unique combinations of natural wonders will appear in their real-world locations, ensuring fresh gameplay even on familiar terrain.
Map generation algorithms for ‘Terra Incognita’ and ‘Shuffle’ map types are also being upgraded with the Voronoi algorithm for increased variation and more natural terrain. Resource generation is improved, leading to faster map loading and generation times, alongside more diverse resource distribution. The diplomacy system is enhanced, allowing players to use influence to maintain alliances without being dragged into wars they disagree with.
User interface improvements are also included, with updates to tile tooltips, settlement banners, and game settings. A new tile distance tool will assist players with city planning.
