Xiaomi is taking a central role in the development of its new Dragon Armor battery, a significant move that underscores the company’s commitment to advancing its electric vehicle technology. At a recent strategic cooperation conference, Xiaomi’s Vice President of Automotive, Li Xiaoshuang, detailed the company’s comprehensive involvement in the battery’s lifecycle.
Xiaomi’s Deep Dive into Battery Technology
The Dragon Armor battery is a collaborative effort between Xiaomi, CALB, and Sunwoda. However, Xiaomi is not just a passive partner. Li Xiaoshuang emphasized that Xiaomi will be deeply involved in the cell design and development, going down to the fundamental level. This includes ensuring the battery’s cycle life and safety margins. Xiaomi will jointly research electrochemical systems, cell design, and manufacturing processes with its suppliers.
Leading Battery Pack Design and Integration
Beyond the cells themselves, Xiaomi will lead the battery pack design and development. This strategic decision allows Xiaomi to control safety and performance from a system-level perspective. Their responsibilities will encompass the mechanical structure, electronic and electrical architecture, vehicle thermal management strategies, and the requirements and software strategies for the Battery Management System (BMS).
Full-Lifecycle Responsibility
In essence, Xiaomi aims for full-process control over the Dragon Armor battery. This includes product definition, leading battery pack development, participating in cell design and development, and overseeing the entire quality control process. This hands-on approach signifies Xiaomi’s ambition to innovate and excel in the critical area of EV battery technology, ensuring both performance and safety standards are met or exceeded.
This integrated strategy positions Xiaomi to not only enhance its own EV offerings but also potentially set new benchmarks in the industry for battery development and manufacturing partnerships.
