Recent events in Zhengzhou, Henan province, have highlighted a concerning new tactic employed by fraudsters: infiltrating school group chats by impersonating teachers and soliciting payments through QR codes. The official “Ping An Zhengzhou” public account issued a warning about these schemes, urging vigilance among parents and educators.

How the Scam Unfolded

A typical case, reported by IT Home, occurred on August 31, 2026. Following a school’s public announcement of class group QR codes on its official platform, malicious actors seized the opportunity. They scanned these codes and infiltrated three high school sophomore classes (Classes 1, 3, and 4). Once inside, the scammers altered their profile pictures and nicknames to precisely match those of the actual homeroom teachers.

The impersonators then announced a mandatory group collection for supposed physical examination fees and insurance, totaling 276 yuan per student. The announcement cited individual fees of 178 yuan for the check-up and 98 yuan for insurance. Tragically, a number of parents, failing to verify the legitimacy of the request, transferred the funds. In this particular incident, 33 parents fell victim to the scam, collectively losing 9,108 yuan.

Police Recommendations for Prevention

The police have issued a strong reminder to schools and teachers about their responsibility in managing these communication channels. Key recommendations include:

  • Strict Access Control: Schools must implement stringent controls over who can join class group chats on platforms like QQ, WeChat, and DingTalk.
  • Regular Audits: Periodically review group memberships and remove any unfamiliar or suspicious accounts. This proactive measure aims to block potential scammers before they can act.
  • Source Blocking: By controlling entry points and monitoring participants, schools can significantly reduce the risk of these scams from the outset.

Parental Due Diligence is Crucial

For parents, the police emphasize the importance of exercising caution and verifying all financial requests related to school activities. They advise:

  • Immediate Verification: Upon receiving any notification about school fees, parents should first contact the homeroom teacher directly. This can be done via phone call or in-person confirmation.
  • Confirm Key Details: Ensure that the entity collecting the fees, the payment channel, and the reason for the charges are all accurate and officially sanctioned by the school.
  • Follow Official Procedures: Only proceed with payment after all details have been thoroughly confirmed and in accordance with the school’s established payment processes.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving nature of online fraud and the need for constant vigilance from all parties involved in the educational ecosystem. By strengthening security measures and promoting diligent verification practices, schools and parents can work together to protect themselves from such deceptive schemes.
