The latest version of the popular open-source ebook management software, Calibre, has been released. Version 9.14 introduces a significant new feature: an AI-powered cover image generator, aiming to solve the common problem of missing or uninspired cover art for personal or fan-fiction ebooks.

AI-Generated Covers for Missing Artwork

Many users often find that ebooks created for personal use or fan fiction lack official cover art. This typically results in their digital bookshelves displaying generic placeholders, often appearing as blank squares or simple text blocks. Calibre 9.14 addresses this visual inconsistency by allowing users to generate custom cover art directly within the application using local AI image generation services.

The process is designed to be straightforward. Users can select a book, click on “Edit metadata,” and then access the new “AI Generate” button. The AI model will then process the book’s title and description, among other textual features, to render a unique, high-resolution artistic cover in a matter of seconds. This feature is particularly beneficial for content that doesn’t typically come with pre-made cover art.

Enhanced Editing and Tagging Features

Beyond the headline AI feature, Calibre 9.14 also brings notable improvements to the book editing and tagging functionalities.

File Browser Hover Preview

Within the book editor, users will now benefit from a new file browser hover preview. Instead of repeatedly clicking to open image files, users can simply hover their mouse pointer over an image file in the browser. A floating thumbnail preview will then appear, streamlining the editing process and saving clicks.

Improved Tag Search

The tag editor has also seen an upgrade, with its search function now capable of ignoring accents. This enhancement makes managing tags for books in multiple languages more inclusive and efficient, as it accommodates variations in spelling and diacritics.

Calibre continues to be a go-to tool for ebook enthusiasts and managers, constantly evolving with user-requested features and technological advancements. The integration of AI for cover generation marks a significant step forward in personalizing the ebook library experience.
