The highly anticipated BMW i3 electric sedan, part of BMW’s new generation platform, has revealed more of its specifications and design details at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show. Attendees were given a closer look at the upcoming model, which promises an impressive CLTC range exceeding 1000 kilometers.
Exterior Elegance and Options
The new BMW i3 measures 4864mm in length, 1865mm in width, and 1490mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3005mm. Its exterior design features the striking ‘Digital Angel Wings’ illuminated grille, glowing M logos on the C-pillars, and L-shaped ‘light blade’ taillights. Enhancing its sleek profile are new semi-hidden door handles and a front trunk for added storage. Buyers will have a choice of nine distinct paint colors, including options like Matte Space Silver, Space Silver, Isle of Man Green, Eucalyptus Green, Le Castellet Blue, Fire Red, Dauern Grauzone, Carbon Black, and Mineral White.
Luxurious and High-Tech Cabin
Inside, the i3 boasts a wrap-around waterfall ambient lighting system and dynamic translucent panels, creating an inviting atmosphere. Comfort is prioritized with features such as heated, ventilated, and massaging seats. The panoramic integrated sky lounge roof offers three-layer silver-coated, low-radiation glass, providing a remarkable 99.9% UV protection. The generous 3005mm wheelbase is dedicated entirely to rear passenger legroom, ensuring exceptional comfort for those in the back. Rear passengers also benefit from a wireless charging armrest, allowing for convenient device charging on the go. The cabin is further enhanced by a Harman Kardon sound system with premium metal speaker grilles.
Customers can personalize their interior with four different upholstery combinations: Illusion White, Crystal Mist / Atlas Grey (two-tone), Amber Chestnut / Smoked White (two-tone), and Amber Chestnut / Atlas Grey (two-tone).
Innovative Technology and Driving Dynamics
The new i3 incorporates BMW’s groundbreaking panoramic iDrive system, featuring a head-up display with augmented reality capabilities and a central control interface. The sporty steering wheel integrates physical buttons with capacitive touch feedback. Underpinning the vehicle’s performance is the BMW ‘Driving Control Super Brain,’ engineered for millisecond-level response. The system’s highly efficient energy recovery braking can handle 98% of user scenarios, providing a smooth and comfortable braking experience, dubbed ‘brake without dizziness,’ ensuring all occupants remain comfortable even during stops.
Powertrain and Charging Prowess
At the heart of the new BMW i3 lies the new-generation electric drive system. This advanced powertrain, coupled with the large-diameter cylindrical batteries – the first large-scale production of this type in China – and an 800V high-voltage architecture, enables the vehicle to achieve a CLTC range exceeding 1000 kilometers. Charging is equally impressive, with the ability to add over 400 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes.
