Big news for fans of Norse mythology and epic combat! Actor Dave Bautista, widely known for his role as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, has officially signed on to portray the legendary Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming God of War series.

A New Kratos Steps In

The highly anticipated series, a joint production between Amazon and Sony, is based on Sony PlayStation’s iconic game franchise. Bautista steps into the formidable boots of Kratos, replacing actor Ryan Hurst. Hurst was initially cast in January 2026 but suffered a bicep tear during a Vancouver set accident in June, requiring surgery and pushing back production. The production team subsequently decided to recast the role, opting for Bautista.

This casting change means all scenes previously filmed by Hurst will need to be reshot. Production for the series began in Vancouver in February 2026, with both seasons planned for a back-to-back shooting schedule. With Bautista now on board, production is expected to resume within weeks. Reports suggest Bautista was a prime candidate due to his ability to embody the character’s required physique on short notice, minimizing further delays.

The God of War Saga Continues

The God of War series aims to adapt the narrative of the recent PlayStation games, specifically the 2018 reboot and its 2022 sequel, God of War Ragnarök. These acclaimed titles shifted the focus to Norse mythology, chronicling the tumultuous journey of Kratos and his son, Atreus.

The series’ plot will follow Kratos and a 10-year-old Atreus on their poignant quest to scatter the ashes of Kratos’s late wife, Faye. Throughout their adventure, father and son will learn from each other, navigating themes of becoming better gods and better humans.

A Stellar Supporting Cast

Bautista and Callum Vinson, who continues as Atreus, will be joined by a talented ensemble cast. Max Parker will play Heimdall, while Ólafur Darri Ólafsson takes on the role of Thor. Mandy Patinkin is set to voice Odin, and Alastair Duncan will portray Mimir. The dwarf brothers Brok and Sindri will be played by Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka, respectively. Ed Skrein rounds out the announced cast as Baldur.

Behind the Scenes Powerhouse

The series is spearheaded by Ronald D. Moore, serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the initial two episodes. The executive producing team also includes Cory Barlog, the game director of the 2018 God of War. The show is a collaborative effort between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, with contributions from PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting news on the live-action adaptation, and Bautista’s casting marks a significant development, promising a powerful portrayal of the iconic Ghost of Sparta.
