The OpenHarmony ecosystem continues to grow with the release of OpenHarmony 7.0 Release. This latest version builds upon the foundations laid by previous beta releases, introducing significant enhancements for application developers and system capabilities. Notably, the release adds support for the new Unisoc P7885 development board, expanding the hardware compatibility for developers.
Enhanced Application Development and System Features
OpenHarmony 7.0 Release focuses on bolstering the application development experience. A key addition is the ModularObjectExtensionAbility, which allows applications to expose their functionalities as modular objects callable by other applications. This promotes a more modular and reusable approach to app development within the OpenHarmony environment.
The package management system has also seen an update with the introduction of the pluginBundleManager module. This empowers applications with the ability to manage self-distributed plugins, including installation and uninstallation directly on the device.
Media and File Management Improvements
The media domain receives a considerable upgrade in OpenHarmony 7.0 Release. New capabilities include PCM audio processing and playback, support for ad insertion, offline caching and downloading, and the ability to pause and resume screen recording. Enhancements to audio device management further refine the multimedia experience.
For file management, a new compression and decompression module has been integrated. This module provides applications with the tools to compress and decompress data, which can be leveraged for tasks such as file packaging, reducing storage footprint, and accelerating network data transfer.
Enterprise Customization and DFX
Enterprise customization sees improvements in account and application management. For devices, the account management features now include interfaces for creating, removing, and switching system accounts. Application management has been enhanced to support querying a list of specified application window status information.
In the realm of DFX (Design for Excellence), HiDebug now supports registering a memory export listener. This listener can be used to export application memory snapshots, either when memory usage is high or triggered manually via the hidumper command, aiding developers in performance analysis and debugging.
Unisoc P7885 Board Support
The integration of the Unisoc P7885 chip development board is a significant highlight of this release. This new hardware support brings advanced features, including 5G cellular communication, unified rendering, GNSS satellite status information reporting (capable of identifying GPS, Beidou, GLONASS, etc.), and StarLight SLE 1.0 pairing and data transmission. The board also comes equipped with six types of sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, along with a standard PCI-E interface.
For the lightweight system variant, optimizations have been made for smaller footprint adaptations, aiming to reduce RAM and ROM usage. Additionally, the release synchronizes updates for pre-installed applications tailored for the Unisoc P7885 board, including file management, calculator, camera, gallery, contacts, messages, and dialer.
Unified SDK and Future Outlook
OpenHarmony 7.0 Release also introduces support for a unified SDK, expanding the capabilities of the OpenHarmony SDK. This move towards a unified SDK is expected to streamline development workflows and improve consistency across different development environments.
This release underscores OpenHarmony’s commitment to providing a robust, flexible, and feature-rich operating system for a wide range of devices. The ongoing development and expanding hardware support indicate a positive trajectory for the open-source project.
