Claude can now refer to past chats

Claude has better, albeit selective, memory. Instead of acting as a perfect catalog of everything you’ve said or shared, Anthropic claims that the AI chatbot now has the ability to refer to past chats when asked, so you don’t have to re-explain your thoughts.

This feature can help you return to a work project after a long break or ask Claude for details about a past research session that you don’t remember very well. The key point is that Claude needs to be given the appropriate task: he does not refer to past chats unless you specifically ask him to. Anthropic also notes that Claude’s ability to refer to chats depends on the workspace and project you are working on.

Anthropic’s implementation is much more limited in scope compared to how ChatGPT’s memory feature works. In April, OpenAI updated ChatGPT to store all your conversations with it and use those records to personalize responses to any new questions or prompts you send. The basic idea is that each conversation can improve the chatbot’s responses. Google allows Gemini to similarly recall past conversations and has also tested using Google search history to further personalize AI responses.

Unlike both, Claude actually only searches past conversations when asked, rather than referencing a profile of past chats. By default, this is more privacy-oriented, and you can disable this feature entirely in Claude using a settings toggle.

If you are subscribed to the Max, Team, or Enterprise plans, the new Claude feature should be available now, according to Anthropic. The company says that this feature will soon be available for other plans as well.
