Apple will help Samsung to produce image sensors

According to The Financial Times, Apple is teaming up with Samsung to produce digital image sensors for future iPhone models. This follows Apple’s announcement on Wednesday that the company is partnering with Samsung’s semiconductor fab in Austin, Texas, to launch “an innovative new chip technology that has never been used anywhere else in the world.”

The Financial Times reports that Samsung will use the advanced chip technology to produce three-layer image sensors for next year’s iPhone 18 line, citing anonymous sources “with knowledge of the deal.” Sony is currently the sole supplier of image sensors for Apple, which are manufactured in Japan under contract with TSMC. Unlike Samsung, Sony does not have a chip manufacturing plant in the United States, which would allow it to avoid the imposition of duties on chips produced outside the United States.

“We remain confident that we are leaders in providing sensor technology to our customers and will focus on further technological advancements by increasing the size and density of sensors,” Sony said in a statement to The Financial Times.

The partnership with Samsung is linked to Apple’s $100 billion expansion of its U.S. manufacturing program, in which the company is investing $600 billion to move much of its supply chain to the United States. “With this technology coming to the U.S. first, this fab will supply chips that optimize the power consumption and performance of Apple products, including iPhone devices shipped around the world,” Apple said in a press release.
