Vodafone Installs Multi-Level Backup Power Systems

Vega, a national telecom operator developing home internet services within the Vodafone Group, has completed the modernization of its alternative power supply systems across all 15 regions where it operates.

To ensure internet access even during potential power outages, the company has purchased and installed 210 new power systems at its GPON technical sites. These systems are optimally adapted to work with modern lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo4) battery packs and allow for rapid charging of such batteries. Additionally, the company has acquired over 2,000 batteries and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).

Thanks to the updated infrastructure, all Vodafone Gigabit Net customers will be able to stay connected for over 100 hours even in the event of a complete power outage.

While the number of GPON sites requiring backup is relatively small, each one is critically important as it serves a large number of subscribers. That’s why the Vodafone Group pays special attention to their energy independence. During potential summer blackouts, this means customers will remain connected to the internet.

“Modern equipment that provides high-speed home internet to customers consumes more electricity, so alternative power systems must be more powerful. To guarantee continuous operation, we fully duplicate power systems to ensure uninterrupted service even if one system fails. Also, all important network nodes are equipped with diesel generator sets (DGS). This way, we create a resilient, multi-level backup system,” explains Bohdan Dub, Chief Power Engineer at Vega, a part of Vodafone Ukraine Group.

Overall, Vodafone invested over 500 million UAH in the stability and development of fixed internet during 2024.

Vodafone’s home internet service is provided exclusively using GPON technology, which ensures gigabit speeds and stable internet services for 1.5 million households in Kyiv, Vyshneve, Kharkiv, Lviv, Dnipro, Odesa, Yuzhne, Chornomorsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Chernihiv, Rivne, Lutsk, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Poltava, Mykolaiv, Zhytomyr, Berdychiv, and Korostyshiv.
