Cloud service providers to become more active in Ukraine

The Ukrainian government has supported the resolution on the regulation of cloud services. This is an important step that will allow Ukraine to become a confident player in the international market.

Cloud services protect from attacks

The first law on cloud services was passed a week before the start of the full-scale war. It allowed us to transfer registries abroad and store data in the cloud. It was then that we realized that the first target of the Russians would be information systems, because the enemy is also waging war in cyberspace.

“Data in the clouds is reliably protected by backup, encryption, and rapid recovery from attacks”, says Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

More than 100 state registries and other information systems have already been moved to the cloud. The new decree will allow data to be left in the cloud abroad and not transferred to Ukraine after the war is over.

What’s next

Regulation of cloud services will also become more effective:

  • The Cabinet will create an electronic catalog of cloud providers for government agencies.
  • Setting clear cybersecurity requirements for vendors.
  • Procurement is streamlined – now transparent and consistent.
  • A standard contract will be introduced. Ukraine is simplifying the work of structures using cloud services.

“The regulation is a green light for international providers to enter the Ukrainian market”, adds Fedorov.

Ukraine is also preparing a unified state strategy for cybersecurity, improving legislative regulation and working with Ukrainian businesses to develop a national cloud storage model.
