Meta’s Threads app is getting new features similar to Instagram. According to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, Threads is adding a special media tab that highlights user posts with photos and videos, as well as the ability to tag photos.
According to Mosseri, the media tab feature is “a long-overdue request from the community.” Both X and Bluesky have a media section in their user profiles (Bluesky also recently added a separate tab for videos). On the other hand, the photo tagging feature in Threads will be familiar to most Instagram users. When you share a photo in a post, you can search for other users’ handles to tag it. These tags will be visible to other users.
Mosseri also said that the Threads markup tool, which was introduced last week, will now be available to all users of the app worldwide. This feature allows users to draw on top of other people’s posts.
In recent months, Meta has significantly accelerated the pace of Threads updates as the app has faced growing competition from Bluesky. This included copying some of the features of its smaller competitor. So far, however, Meta’s strategy seems to be working. According to Mosseri, the number of Threads users has grown to 320 million monthly, 100 million of whom return daily. The company has also recently started testing its first ads on the service.
